what makes wool hunting clothes so special?

Wool fibers consist of an inner core of protein, which is covered by overlapping scales. The protein core will absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without becoming damp or clammy.

The overlapping scales which cover wool fibers are hard, reducing wear and tear on the fibers, at the same time preventing water penetration. Wool Hunting Clothes also contain lanolin, a natural water-repellent grease. The wool or fleece on a sheep protects the animal by first turning away rain and water. The fibers are strong and elastic, and are usually wavy, or crimped. The wavy pattern of the Wool fibers creates voids between the fibers and these voids capture insulating dead air that, in turn, restricts the transfer of body heat. The core protein of the wool absorbs moisture from the air spaces and transfers it to the outer surface of the wool's fleece. It is this moisture management feature that makes wool warm even when damp. Wool fibers are strong and difficult to break and these fibers also stretch. It is the elasticity and strength of wool that permits movement without the lose of insulating warmth. The scales, aside from repelling water, also naturally repels dirt. Since all wool fibers outer ends are aligned in the same outer direction, Wool Clothes for Hunting remain clean longer, because the nature of the fleece is to push dirt to the outside.
